自己紹介

As can be seen from my resume, I have worked in a great variety of fields from speeches given by Prime Ministers and Ministry of Education officials to animation scripts. Moreover, because of my vast experience, I can translate much faster than younger people. I was recently retired from the Ministry of Education but feel too young to be retired. I am currently in very good health and come from a family known for longevity. My mother died at age 97 in her sleep in her home in May, and I have an aunt in New York who is 100.

1964-65年：ロサンゼルス市立の高校の優等生のための特別プログラムで、高校生でありながら、UCLA　(カリフオルニア州立大学のロス校)にも大学生として入学。
１９６５年：Hollywood 高校を卒業し、Barnard College（コロンビア大学）に入学
１９６９年：　Barnard College、学士号　（Asian Studies）
１９７３年、米：コロンビア大学、修士号　（日本文学）；博士課程のすべての試験に合格と単位取得。　指導教授はドナルド・キーン博士（日本の文化勲章の受賞者）。フルブライト奨学金を受けて、１９７３年１０月から京都大学の大学院の研究生になる。しかし、繰り返して、ひどい気管支炎に見舞われていただけではなく、１９７６年にタクシーで交通事故にあって、博士論文を断念して、しばらく治療とリハビリに専念しました。　
　しかし、私は現在、健康で、30３０年間以上、毎日、ヨガ体操をやっています。　その上、長寿家系出身です。私の母親は２００９年５月、９７歳にして自宅で眠るように亡くなりました。　また、１０月に、１００歳の叔母も自宅のベッドで亡くなりました。

　海外民主党 日本支部(Democrats Abroad Japan)の長年の会員として、２００９年、オバマ大統領の就任式に招待されました。

Academic Record
1964-65: Was admitted to and took classes at UCLA on a special honors program while still a student at Hollywood High School
1965: Graduated from Hollywood High School, enrolled in Barnard College (Columbia University)
1969: Graduated from Barnard College, with a major in Asian Studies and on the Dean’s List; admitted to Columbia University Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures
1970-71: Studied at the Inter-University Center (formerly Stanford Center) for Japanese Language Studies, then in Tokyo (now in Yokohama), on a National Defense Foreign Language (NDFL) Fellowship
1971-73: Returned to Columbia University on consecutive NDFL fellowships
1973: Received M.A. in Japanese Language and Literature, admitted to Ph.D. program and pass all examinations for the Ph.D.; receive Fulbright Fellowship and get enrolled as a research student at Kyoto University in October
In the following years, I was in an automobile accident and was repeatedly ill with bronchitis, so did not finish my Ph.D. thesis. At present, I am healthy and have been practicing yoga daily for nearly 30 years.　I also come from a family known for longevity. My mother died at age 97, last May in her sleep in her own home, and .my 100-year old aunt similarly died in her own apartment in New York in October.

I head the Barnard College Alumnae Association in Japan and am a member of the Columbia University Japan Alumni Association. As a longtime member of Democrats Abroad Japan, I was invited to President Obama’s Inauguration in January 2009.

その間、フリーの翻訳家とライターになって、また”Tokyo Weekender”という英字新聞のcolumn(２００２年ま)を持つようになる
１９７９年：NHKの国際局に入る。　その傍らに、フリーの翻訳家とライターとしても活動。
１９８７年：　Charles E. Tuttle というアメリカ系の出版社の編集者になる。その傍らに、フリーの翻訳家とライターとしても活動。
１９８９年：　Omega Communicationsという翻訳・編集会社に入る。その傍らに、フリーの翻訳家とライターとしても活動。
１９９３年５月：東京大学の国際交流課に契約公務員として入って、歴代の総長、副学長の論文、スピーチなどの英訳を担当して、２００８年３月末まで続いていて定年退職した。数人の副学長の通訳も勤めました。　その傍らに、フリーの翻訳家とライターとしても活動。　また、その間の６年間　(２００１年まで)、“Mainichi Weekly”(英文毎日)の編集者とエッセイストになる。　また、２００２年、文部学省大臣官房国際課に契約公務員として入って、歴代の文部大臣、政務官、事務次官、審議官の通訳と論文、スピーチの英訳だけではなく、三人の総理大臣のスピーチの英訳も担当して、２００９年３月３１日まで続いていて、定年退職した。

出版物：　　平成６年には，東京大学の当時の吉川弘之総長の薦めで社団法人科学と経済の会にサンプル英訳を提供し，日本の科学技術と経済に関する学術的な本の翻訳家として採用され，その英訳本”Made in Japan”は後にＭＩＴPress（マサチューセッツ工科大学の出版部）から出版された。そのほかの出版物は，自分の書き下ろしの本”Grand　Sumo”や，コロンビア大学大学院での恩師だったドナルド・キーン教授 (文化勲章の受賞者)と一緒に編集した「Proverbs: 日英ことわざ辞典」河口洋一郎: “Growth Morphogenesis: A Journey to the Origins of Form,”の英訳と２０冊以上の写真集と画集の解説文の英訳（そのうち，新正卓の｛遥かなる祖国: A Portrait of Japanese Immigrants to South America｝は土門拳賞を受賞，また、瀬戸正人の｛バンコク、ハノイ　（Bangkok, Hanoi）｝ は木村伊兵衛賞を受賞），長野の冬季オリンピックの海外からの取材陣のためのプレス・キット（開会式の解説、長野県の説明、地域の文化などが入っているパンプレット）の英訳，　テレビ・アニメ｛ドラえもん｝の脚本の２年間分の海外向け英訳，東映動画の｛姫ちゃんのリボン｝，｛Dr. Slump/アラレちゃん｝，{ドラゴンボール}，{燃えよう、アーサー}，{スラムダンク}等の多くのアニメの脚本の海外向け英訳などがある。
　また，自作の日本語のエッセイは，[週刊朝日]，[新潮４５}，[サンデー毎日]、
[正論}，[スポーツ・ナンバー]などの雑誌や，[ペットへの感謝状}，[裏の知識]，
[美の知識]，[金の知識]，[禁の知識]，[神の知識]などの本に掲載されている。
さらに，書き下ろしの英文の記事は，“Japan Quarterly”，“Ms”，“The Japan Economic Journal”， “Intersect”，JALの機内誌，ANAの機内誌などに掲載されている。

Professional Career:
While undergoing rehabilitation for injuries sustained in the taxi accident, I began working freelance as a J-E translator. I also started working as a columnist for “Tokyo Weekender,” which continued for over 20 years.
1979: Took up a part-time position at the International Department of NHK, while continuing freelance work as a writer and translator
1987: Became an editor at Charles E. Tuttle, Co., while continuing freelance work as a writer and translator
1989: Became a translator/editor at Omega Communications, while continuing freelance work as a writer and translator
1993-2008: Took up a part-time position at the Division for International Affairs of the University of Tokyo, while continuing freelance work as a writer and translator. During my 15 years at the university, I translated for 5 successive university presidents and several vice-presidents, and was in charge of various communications with other universities around the world.
1995-2001: I was invited to work part-time also as an editor/writer for the “Mainichi Weekly” (The position was ultimately eliminated because of the Mainichi Newspaper Company’s financial difficulties)
2002-2009: While working at the University of Tokyo, I was invited to work part-time at the International Department, Minister’s Secretariat, Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. At the Ministry, I translated not only for the Minister of Education and other high-ranking officials but also for three of the past Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) Prime Ministers of Japan.
